Familiarizing Ourselves With Different Kinds Of Saunas Used In Different Cultures

A sauna is a closed space, such as a small hut, closet, or bathroom, that has been specially constructed to allow a person to take a steam bath inside. This requires temperatures of more than 150 degrees most often.

When you take a sauna, or sit in a sauna, this is very relaxing. You also will sweat. This is beneficial. Sauna, the word, actually comes from the Finnish “savuna,” which means “in smoke.”

It makes sense if you consider the structure of very early saunas. These were just big holes dug into the ground and covered with a roof to keep out cold or rain. In the middle of the hole would be a pit for fire. Modern sauna facilities have been around since about 1700 when sauna facilities were installed in some public bathhouses.

Many cultures have their own versions of sauna. The bania or banya in Russia, thermae in Rome, hammam in Turkey, and sweat lodge in North America, are all examples of sauna -type experiences.

In North America, saunas are increasingly common in public sports facilities, and in the gyms of colleges and universities. These usually combine low humidity with high temperatures which makes it more bearable and less uncomfortable.

Better still, there are health benefits to using a sauna. When you sweat, this releases toxins from your body. The heat of a sauna also contributes to health, because it improves the immune system and generates white blood cells.

There are some people who should not use saunas. Following up a sauna with a cool shower can increase blood pressure, so if you have high blood pressure to begin with you should avoid saunas. You also need to be careful if you start feeling poorly, as saunas can cause heat stroke. Increase in health awareness in America has lead to greater popularity of saunas, however.

In past years, saunas were heated via wood fire. This isn’t all that safe nor is it efficient. Now, we usually heat saunas via gas or electricity. Sauna is gaining in popularity worldwide, but is still most common in Finland.

Besides type of saunas, this writer additionally regularly shares writing regarding air compressor hose and pressure washers pumps.
